Snow Update Hochoetz

The Hochoetz Ski Region has started its winter season on 15 December 2017. On occasion of the “My Winter Start” opening weekend great advantages and party fun are waiting for winter aficionados – plus excellent snow conditions on the slopes! I tried and tested it personally already three days prior to the official season start: I headed from Ochsengarten up to Bielefelder Hütte on my splitboard …

It won’t be easy – but exceptionally beautiful!

The hamlet of Ochsengarten seemed quite sleepy to me on this Tuesday morning (12 Dec 2017), the day of my “on-site inspection”. But this endless peace and quiet, coupled with slight snowfall, provides this very special atmosphere that enchants all nature explorers.

I am not as lonely as I thought: two other ski mountaineers strapped on their skis right next to me – in order to conquer the approx. 700 meters of altitude gain up to Bielefelder Hütte.

And off I go! The first altitude meters are a leisurely stroll and I find the right rhythm very quickly. One thing is for sure: the freshly fallen snow during the night, about 15 centimeters, doesn’t make the ascent easier. But much more scenic and beautiful!

I stop frequently to take pictures on my way up to the hut. Or I simply watch the fascinating “battle” between sunshine and fog (tied game!). A true winter wonderland, and there is nothing to be added on this splendid ascent.

Once arrived at the Panorama Restaurant, I decide to continue further on to Bielefelder Hütte immediately. Two slope grooming machines are preparing the slopes which are in perfect conditions – thanks to the slope groomers and Mother Hulda. This year, Hochoetz has heaps of snow! I follow the groomed ski run that takes me up to the mountain hut with less effort. On top I grab my splitboard (a combination of snowboard and mountaineering skis) – I can’t wait for the splendid reward of this tour: the downhill part … (for more details watch the video at the very bottom)

So I have already celebrated My Winter Start in Hochoetz in a fairly private way – it is almost indescribable! But also the official Opening Weekend, taking place from 15 to 17 December, boasts great specials (e.g. 2-day skiing fun at the price of one day) and “Ö3 Pistenbully” party highlights including a varied entertaining program for all ages. And next time I will take a ride on the lift …

• 10:00 am – 3:45 pm: Weselelift, base station
